Strands

CAS is built around three strands: creativity, activity, and service. It is important to have a strong CAS portfolio that includes a balance across all three strands, rather than only focusing on one.

Strand 1: Creativity

    Definition

According to the IBDP, this strand is about exploring and extending ideas that result in original or interpretive product of performance. It focuses on creative thinking, problem-solving, and the process of creation itself. Essentially, it is about allowing you to express yourself, build artistic or intellectual skills, and step outside your comfort zone.

    Misconceptions

Creativity isn't necessarily limited to "art", rather it can include any project involving leadership, innovation, or original thinking like running a Math Club or working on an RC project.

    Example Ideas

  • Participating in school clubs (e.g. Oakbotics, Math Club, MUN, RFTT, etc.)
  • Composing music or playing a musical instrument
  • Coding a video game
  • Designing posters or graphics for a club/campaign
  • Creating and running a social media account

Strand 2: Activity

    Definition

According to the IBDP, this strand refers to any physical exertion or experience that contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

    Misconceptions

This isn't only about sports, but includes all activities that promote physical well-being and challenge endurance, coordination, or strength, regardless of how physically demanding they are.

    Example Ideas

  • Biking to and from school
  • Organizing intramural sports at lunch (e.g. table tennis club)
  • Joining a dance class or martial arts group
  • Learning to swim or cycle
  • Hiking, rock climbing, or outdoor adventure trips

Strand 3: Service

    Definition

According to the IBDP, this strand is about contributing to the welfare of others and engaging with real community needs. It should be purposeful, collaborative, and mutually beneficial. Service helps you develop empathy, leadership, and a deeper understanding of the world around you.

    Example Ideas

  • Volunteering at a food bank, animal shelter, or hospital
  • Planting trees or participating in a climate change campaign (e.g. Reforest London)
  • Tutoring struggling students
  • Organizing a mental health awareness campaign
  • Planning a fundraiser for disaster relief or humanitarian causes
